We also have a four star grading from the SA Grading Council. This unique home and guest house is set in a tranquil, tropical garden with shady trees and a swimming pool. The town of St Lucia can be regarded as the gateway to the St Lucia Wetlands which has been proclaimed as a World Heritage Site. The Santa Lucia Guest House offers warm friendly hospitality in a homely atmosphere. The rooms are comfortable and tastefully furnished and the following choices are available:

Room no 1

Santa Lucia Room 1

- Has twin beds and an en suite shower and toilet with a small private patio . When the inter-leading door to room 4 is opened, it can be regarded as a very spacious family unit. If requested in advance, these twin beds can be converted to a king size bed by adding another mattress.

Room no 2

– Has twin beds, an en suite shower and toilet and an extra divan, suitable for a young person. This room is also called a “garden” room as it has a door leading onto a private patio, the garden and swimming pool area. If requested in advance, these twin beds can be converted to a king size bed by adding another mattress.

Room no 3

 Santa Lucia Room 3

- Has twin beds with an en suite shower and toilet and an extra divan suitable for a young person. We call this a “garden” room as it also has a door leading to a private patio, the garden and swimming pool. The twin beds can, on request, be converted into a king size bed by adding a king size mattress.

Room no 4

- Is a large room with full bathroom (bath, shower and toilet) and a private patio leading onto the garden and swimming pool area. This room has an extra length queen size bed and a seating area and is the room we usually allocate to honeymoon couples. (This room has a lockable door which can connect with no 1).

Rooms 1 and 4 - are usually used separately but a lockable inter-leading door can be opened when we have a family staying. These two rooms then form a complete suite with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, both with their own private patio leading onto the garden and swimming pool area.

Santa Lucia Room 4

Rooms 5 and 6

- Form the extremely popular annexe. The annexe is an apartment separate from the main house, yet linked by a large veranda. Room 5 consists of a room with a queen size bed and full bathroom (bath and shower). It has an inter-leading door to Room 6, another bedroom with twin beds and its own en suite bathroom consisting of a shower and toilet. The twin beds in no 6 can also, on request, be converted into a king size bed.

Adjoining rooms 5 and 6 has a private sitting and relaxing area with an extra divan to sleep an additional person. The annexe can easily accommodate 5 persons and is ideal for a group of 4 or 5 people or a family as it offers much more space and privacy. These rooms can be let as a unit or separately, as each one has its own entrance.

Although no cooking can be done in the annexe, there are tea/coffee making facilities, a large refrigerator and a microwave oven for heating milk or ‘take-aways’. Some extra crockery is available in the cupboards of the kitchen in case the group wish to make a few sandwiches or perhaps a salad.

The annexe area has a large private patio which has a beautiful view across the garden and swimming pool – it is private and special and gives the feeling of being surrounded by trees and tropical growth.

The Santa Lucia Guesthouse is an intimate, friendly home located two blocks off the main street of St Lucia. It is privately owned and the hosts serve their guests breakfast in the morning themselves. Their breakfasts cater to all palates from continental breakfasts with a selection of breads, croissants, muffins and a variety of preserves, cheeses and cold meats, to a sumptuous English breakfast. The buffet table is laden with bacon, grilled tomato's, mushrooms, quiche, minute steaks, savoury mince, hash browns, peepers and eggs of your choice be it boiled, poached, scrambled, fried or an omelette. A variety of cereals, muesli, fresh and plain yogurts are also available. The guests absolute favourite is the wonderfully exotic selection of seasonal tropical fruit and delicious fruit salad. For those not wanting tea or coffee, large glass frosted pitchers of freshly squeezed seasonal fruit juice is on hand to quench your morning thirst.

Guests can enjoy their breakfasts indoors or out on the terrace. When the weather is good which is most days guests prefer to sit outside savouring their early morning meal in the lush tropical garden before heading off to enjoy the sites St Lucia and the surrounds have to offer...

The Lake St Lucia area was declared a Nature Reserve in 1897. This reserve included the Lake and some of the surrounding land. The original reserve of 37,000 Ha is considered the oldest permanently declared reserve in Africa. In 2007 the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park was renamed to iSimangaliso (meaning "Miracle, or Marvel") Wetland Park. The park's uniqueness lies in its remarkable diversity. It is South Africa's third-largest park, spanning 280 kilometres of coastline, from the Mozambican border in the north to Cape St Lucia, south of the St Lucia estuary. The natural ecosystem consist of swamps, lake systems, beaches, coral reefs, wetlands, woodlands and coastal forests. Lake St. Lucia is the largest Estuarine system in the world. These ecosystems provide a natural habitat for an astounding diversity of species, from the country's largest population of hippos and crocodiles to giant leatherback turtles, black rhino, leopards, and a vast array of bird and marine life. St Lucia supports more species of animal than the better-known and much larger Kruger National Park and Okavango Delta.

Tours can be arranged to local Zulu Villages which have been set up to educate and inform tourists about traditional Zulu life. There are two villages from which the visitor can choose - both are a short drive from St Lucia. They can only be visited if accompanied by a guide.

The Khula village is a contemporary village - more a township, providing insight into how the local Zulu people live today.

The Veyane village is a true cultural experience - the tour takes the visitor into the heart of a real working Zulu community where age-old tradition meets contemporary Zulu society.

Ilala Weavers near Hluhluwe make large beautiful woven baskets in the traditional Zulu style.

There are numerous walks within easy commute or walking distance from the Guesthouse. These vary from gentle to fairly strenuous and include pristine beach walks and dune forest hiking.

St. Lucia and the coastal area in particular is a birding paradise, with over 450 species identified. The area also has 29 Red Data listed birds.

Boat trips and sundown cruises on the lake can be arranged. On these trips you will be introduced to the white and black mangrove ecosystems unique to this area, as well as animal and birdlife that inhabit this wetland.

You can visit the crocodile farm on your own or join a guided tour. On certain days you can even watch them feed the crocs.

There are also many beautiful warm beaches nearby, the best of which is the unspoilt beach of Cape Vidal - situated within the Eastern Shores Game Reserve. Cape Vidal offers safe warm Indian Ocean swimming and snorkelling on a natural reef within a calm bay.

Guided safaris in a specially modified vehicle suited for game watching can be arranged in the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, where the Big Five can be seen. Guests will be collected at the B&B. The game reserve is within 50km of the B&B.

Deep-sea fishing charters can be arranged on your behalf. A wide variety of fish can be caught on these trips, including game fish such as sailfish and marlin. There are also fly fishing opportunities from the beach .

Kayaking tours with experienced guides on Lake St.Lucia allow visitors to get up close to an array of water birds, hippos and crocodiles.

Some of the best whale watching along the South African coast can be found in these waters from July to November. Tours can be arranged, and booking is essential to secure your place for an unforgettable experience.

Turtle-nesting tours are available with a qualified guide. (December to February only).

Scenic horseback rides in the wetland park or along the beach are available. Watching game on horseback is definitely a novel experience.

Two golf courses are within easy commute. The Umfolozi golf course is 55km away at the Umfolozi Country Club. Other facilities at the club include tennis and squash courts. The second golf course is the Monzi golf course, 16km from St Lucia. Both courses are 9 hole courses with two tee off positions, thus making them 18 hole courses.

There is a Bowling club should any guests be interested in lawn bowls. It is on Pelikaan Street, 500 metres from the guest house.
